It comes in two families: A fixed-width typeface and a natural typeface.

The fixed-width version, called Operator Mono, features letters of all the same widths.

The natural Operator family lets the letter relax and take a more proportional shape.

Mono was developed by Andy Clymer, a senior designer at Hoefler & Co, who designs typefaces as well as programs.

In coding applications, the fixed-width of monospaced typefaces serves a purpose: When every letter is the same width, letters on different lines of code remain perfectly aligned.

The width-constraints of the monospaced font resulted in letters that look just a little bit off.
