Dyson redesigned its Air Multiplier fan to be 75 percent quieter. But in order to do that, it had to totally gut the original version.

Dyson engineers found that the first generation of fan wasn't as efficient as it could have been. Here, the fan is undergoing acoustic testing.

The first thing Dyson changed was the shape of the loop. They created a larger opening at the bottom of the loop so air could flow into it with less turbulence. This means the fan uses less energy and makes less noise.

They also placed the motor and impeller inside a Helmholtz cavity, which essentially acts as a silencer, trapping the harsh frequencies inside the machine.

The Helmholtz cavity catches sound waves as they travel through the fan and bounces them around in order to dissipate, and ultimately improve, the sound of the device.
