Twenty-year-old culinary institution, The French Laundry, recently hired architecture studio Snøhetta to renovate its kitchen and garden. Here, the glass-walled, modern kitchen. The green patterns are modeled after drawings Snøhetta designers created after watching Thomas Keller's chef's hands at work.

The more modern kitchen has a few affordances to help open up the space, like nooks in the counters so staff can step out the way. The curved channels on the ceiling are to help acoustics travel better, when chefs have to issue orders while still facing the stovetops.

The expansion will also allow the garden to double in size. This wall shows the new drop-off location for guests at the restaurant.
