Gallery: Gender-Swapped Justice League and an Actual Wolverine: The Best Art at NY Comic Con
01Stacey Lee Art
New York Comic Con 2013 is currently in full swing, and WIRED is on the floor checking out the best and most interesting art at the annual convention for comics and popular culture in the Big Apple. But don't be blinded by the big booths and bright lights -- the real gems are tucked away in Artist Alley, where world-class cartoonists are on hand to hawk their wares, hobnob with fans, and sign and sketch in books. Click through to meet 10 of our favorite off-the-beaten-path artists and check out their work. Above: Stacey Lee's Storm ------------------------- We stumbled across New York-based [Stacey Lee](http://www.oddplacement.com/)'s table at table O4 and immediately fell in love with her interpretations of some of our favorite drawn women, like *X-Men*'s Storm and Rogue and the heroine of [*Princess Mononoke*](http://www.oddplacement.com/post/20328089886/san-moro-from-the-studio-ghibli-film-princess). "I like darker characters," she tells WIRED. "I'm new to comics, though. I started in traditional illustration, so this is a new direction for me."
02Janet Lee Art
Janet Lee --------- [Janet K. Lee](http://www.j-k-lee.com/J-K-Lee/About_Me.html) is a Nashville-based artist whose elegant work is most often found retelling classic tales, like Marvel's *Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey* and [*The Wonderland Alphabet*](http://www.amazon.com/The-Wonderland-Alphabet-Adventures-Through/dp/1936393867). Lee will be premiering [*Adventures in Slumberland*](http://www.gotosleepnemo.com), a fanciful new "homage" to the classic Winsor McCay strip, online later this month, but she's got some spectacular art from it available at table X7. (Above: Lee's more realistic take on Wolverine)
03Jim Mahfood Art
Jim Mahfood ----------- L.A.-based [Jim Mahfood](http://www.jimmahfood.com) is known for his work on series like [*Grrl Scouts*](http://www.jimmahfood.com/projects/grrl-scouts/) [*Tank Girl*](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_Girl) and [*Clerks*](http://www.amazon.com/Clerks-Comic-Books-Kevin-Smith/dp/1582402094); his work is strongly influenced by – and often paired with – hip-hop and street culture. "I always incorporate the music I'm listening to while making the books I've done," he tells WIRED from his post at table V10. "It's a really L.A. thing to say, but I am really into all the Odd Future stuff right now: Tyler the Creator, Earl, I love it all." Above: Jim Mahfood's *Tank Girl*
04superherobend-yazmin liang
Yasmin Liang ------------ [Yasmin Liang](http://yazmeanie.com/), who's sharing table O4 with Stacey Lee this year, incorporates upper-class wardrobes and [gender-bending reimaginings](http://yazmeanie.com/illustration/bend.png) into her work. "I am super jet-lagged!" the first-time NYCC exhibitor told WIRED. "I just flew in from Hong Kong yesterday, and it's an exact 12-hour time difference. I'm just going to nap between commissions." Above: Liang's *Justice League Bend*
05Scott C Art
Scott C ------- [Scott C.](http://www.pyramidcar.com/) is best known for his work with videogame studio [Double Fine](http://www.doublefine.com/) and his [Great Showdowns](http://greatshowdowns.com/) series (now collected in two hardcover volumes), which chronicles hundreds of iconic confrontations from film history. We're in love with his charmingly weird takes on pop culture, from comics to science to cinema. He's at table N2 this year, and there's no beating his doodles when you buy a signed copy of one of his books. Above: Scott C.'s *The Cosmos*
06KATIE COOK ART
Katie Cook ---------- Katie Cook is an icon of all-ages comics, from Star Wars, to My Little Pony, to [Gronk](http://www.gronkcomic.com/), her webcomic about a young monster exploring the world with her sometimes-reluctant human guardian. At table C10, check out her tiny watercolor paintings for $5 – you won't find better-priced original art – as well as her grown-up collection of cat cartoons, *F\*\*k You, Box*.
07Gary Erskine Art
Gary Erskine ------------ Gary Erskine is a Glasgow artist whose work spans the gamut, series-wise, but this year at table H14, he's displaying prints and a sketchbook for his forthcoming series [*Roller Grrrls*](http://rollergrrrls.com/), for which he solicited the participation of his local [Glasgow Rollergirls league](http://glasgowrollerderby.com/). The central derby team in the series comprises entirely fictional characters, but some of the players on teams they battle share their names with real-life counterparts.
08Sanford Greene Art
Sanford Greene -------------- We love Sanford Greene for his graceful takes on post-apocalyptic cityscapes. He's best known for his [*Rotten Apple* one-off book](http://www.darkhorse.com/Comics/21-706/Rotten-Apple-one-shot), which tells the story of the street-smart San Gee as she searches her crumbling metropolis for religious relics, but at this year's New York Comic Con, he's promoting [a Kickstarter for *Deadlines Vol. 4*](http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1235790455/deadlines-vol-4-the-art-of-sanford-greene), his newest art anthology which, he says, "features more original content than any other *Deadlines* book." Donate $30 or more to the campaign and pick up one of his gorgeous prints at table Q17 for free. Above: Greene's *Rotten Apple*
09Jeremy Bastian Art
Jeremy Bastian -------------- Yes, [Jeremy Bastian](http://jeremybastian.blogspot.com/)'s gorgeous all-ink illustrations for his book [*The Cursed Pirate Girl*](http://www.amazon.com/Cursed-Pirate-Girl-Jeremy-Bastian/dp/1936393603) are as labor-intensive as their minute details suggest: "Each page takes about a week to draw, and I'm able to go at my own pace because I don't have deadlines," he tells WIRED from table I11, "which is why the next volume of *Pirate Girl* might not be out for a while." NYCC 2013 is his third New York show. Above: Bastian's *Cursed Pirate Girl*
10Robbi Rodriguez Art
Robbi Rodriguez --------------- Robbi Rodriguez is the Portland, Oregon-based creator of "acid western" webcomic [*Frankie Get Your Gun*](http://frankiegetyourgun.com/); his spindly, too-cool characters remind us of Jamie Hewlett's notable animated band Gorillaz. At table Q16 this year, he's displaying prints in addition to the LP cover of a concept album based on his *Frankie* comic written and recorded by a friend in L.A. "I felt bad I couldn't pay him for the soundtrack," he tells WIRED, "so designing the cover art for him was the least I could do. By selling \[the vinyl art\], they were able to pay for their next album."
