OnePlus Open Camera Samples

OnePlus Open, Portrait mode. I love that the phone made sure to keep his mouth and eyes perfectly in focus, with a nice bokeh effect trailing around. The details are super sharp here with punchy colors.

OnePlus Open, 3X optical zoom. Some of the dark parts of this photo (like the black cats) could stand to be a smidge brighter, but it's a decently sharp image for the evening lighting at the time.

OnePlus Open, main camera. I snapped this quick shot while riding my bike across the bridge. There's some grain in the shadows but the colors are pleasing and it's pretty sharp all around.

OnePlus Open, main camera with Night mode. Compared to the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold5 (pictures not included), the OnePlus Open darkens up the sky and it's difficult to see much else past the roof. But I like the warmer tones here, and it is the sharpest shot.

Photograph: Julian Chokkattu05OnePlus Open, 3X optical with Night mode. Compare this photo with the following image. The OnePlus Open's 3X zoom mode usually offered up sharper results than that from Samsung's Galaxy Fold5. I like the contrast here and the color tones are much better.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu06Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, 3X optical zoom with Night mode. It's clear I perhaps should have stood more still for this image, but it's blurry. It's also way too bright from what the scene really looked like, and the colors are a bit washed out.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu07OnePlus Open, 3X optical zoom. This phone doesn't handle HDR scenes like this *as* well as phones like the Pixel Fold. In reality, the brick building in the foreground didn't look this dark at all but was actually fairly bright. The color temperature was also not this blue. Compare it with the following image.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu08Google Pixel Fold, 2X zoom. The Pixel doesn't have a 3X optical zoom but 5X, so I stuck with the 2X zoom here, which is why it just isn't anywhere near as sharp as the OnePlus Open's photo. Still, the color temperature, white balance, and brightness of the scene overall are much more in line with what it was like in real life.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu09OnePlus Open, 6X zoom. The 6X zoom on the OnePlus crops in the sensor of the telephoto camera, meaning the result is sharper than what you'll get with normal pinch-to-zoom digital cropping. Compare it with the following Pixel Fold photo. The colors are more saturated and there's more contrast, but it's sharper.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu10Google Pixel Fold, 5X optical zoom. The OnePlus Open's photo is sharper overall, but the colors here are a little more true to life. I'd still take the OnePlus Open's photo though.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu11OnePlus Open, 3X optical zoom. I love using telephoto cameras and you should too\! I love how sharp this image is, though even without a reference I can tell you these colors are too saturated. Thankfully, you can dial it down in post.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu12OnePlus Open, Portrait mode. The portrait mode is pretty great, however, it doesn't do a great job of getting skin tones correct. My wife's skin is smoothened up here, and it almost looks like the phone applied makeup. It *is* super sharp though. Compare it with the following image.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu13Google Pixel Fold, Portrait mode. The Pixel's photo isn't as sharp and it looks a bit more processed, but this is what the color scheme was actually like in real life. Gone is that weird yellow twinge and the pink lipstick the OnePlus applied on my wife.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu14OnePlus Open, 3X optical zoom with Night mode. This photo is stunningly sharp despite how dark it was. The colors are souped up here, and you can see that it struggles to brighten up the top right side part of the photo too.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu15Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, 3X optical zoom with Night mode. This photo is slightly blurry if you look closely, though Samsung brightens up the whole scene a bit more (the top right doesn't just fade to black).
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu16OnePlus Open, main camera with Night mode. This is one of my favorite photos because it's finally a Night mode that doesn't simply over-brighten a scene up. This park had zero light so it was *really* dark, and while the OnePlus Open *does* make it brighter than what it looked like in real life (and a whole lot more colorful), it still preserves much of that nighttime look and is super sharp. Compare this with the following photo.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu17Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, main camera with Night mode. You might prefer this photo because it's brighter, but this brightness just comes out of nowhere and isn't really natural. When I use Night mode, yes I want a brighter photo, but I'm hoping for a sharper photo that doesn't look like someone turned on all the lights. The OnePlus photo is a hair sharper, but I prefer the darkness of it over Samsung's bright image.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu18OnePlus Open, 6X zoom. The OnePlus likes to crank up the colors and contrast and that's pretty evident here. Compare it with the following image. This one is sharper, and I have noticed that many of the trees I've captured with the Open have much sharper-looking leaves than the results from the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold5.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu19Google Pixel Fold, 5X optical zoom. This color scheme and contrast are more in line with reality, but even the leaves are sharper on the OnePlus photo.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu20OnePlus Open, main camera with Night mode. Here's a misstep for the OnePlus. This photo is a bit fuzzy overall. And the parts that are dark are almost pitch black with no detail.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu21Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, main camera with Night mode. Samsung's photo is a bit sharper, though still not perfect. It manages to brighten up some areas a bit better though.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu22OnePlus Open, main camera with Night mode. Compare this image with the following photo. While the contrast and colors are a bit intense here, this lighting and sky are more in line with reality. The leaves are also sharper here and aren't as over-brightened.
Photograph: Julian Chokkattu23Google Pixel Fold, main camera with Night mode. The lighting on the leaves is a bit too washed out, and while you can see the stars more clearly, the sky is a bit too bright. It's just not as sharp as the OnePlus photo.
