Gallery: 10 Game Trailers That Rocked PAX Prime
01rise-of-nightmares
The biannual Penny Arcade Expo is a convention where gamers may do whatever they please. Want to watch chiptune artists in concert? Bring some earplugs. Want to hear game developers speak on panel discussions? You're covered. Or, you could just — stay with me, here — play some of the hottest new and upcoming videogames on display. In case you missed the most recent PAX, held last weekend in Seattle, here are many of the new game trailers, behind-the-scenes videos and gameplay footage excerpts released by publishers during the three-day expo. With Microsoft taking over a huge chunk of the convention center for its first-ever [Halo Fest](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gamelife/2011/08/halo-fest/), one of the big stars of the weekend was Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. But indie games and big-budget productions alike shared the stage. __Above:__ Rise of Nightmares ------------------ Sega's upcoming Rise of Nightmares for the Xbox 360's Kinect isn't like other games utilizing the camera-powered controller. This video introduces one of the game's undead creatures, who will tell you why that is: "No dancing, no steering wheel and ... no perky aerobics instructor." Sold. [Rise of Nightmares](http://www.sega.com/games/rise-of-nightmares/) will be available Sept. 6.
02star-fox-64-3d
Star Fox 64 3D -------------- Nintendo's latest 3DS game is another remake of a beloved Nintendo 64 classic. But while the campaign mode of [Star Fox 64 3D](http://starfox643d.nintendo.com/) is straight out of the 1997 original, the four-person multiplayer mode is all new. I played this before PAX, and found that the Mario Kart-style power-up items add a lot to the dogfight gameplay.
03jetpack-joyride
Jetpack Joyride --------------- Does much need to be said that Jetpack Joyride's title doesn't cover? The creator of Fruit Ninja cooks up another simple yet probably addictive iOS game, one in which you try to get as far as you can in one of many different jetpacks before wiping out. The 99-cent [Jetpack Joyride](http://www.halfbrick.com/our-games/jetpack-joyride/) will blast off Sept. 1.
04halo-anniversary-behind-the-scenes-campaign
Halo: Anniversary — Behind the Scenes: Campaign ----------------------------------------------- Microsoft says it hasn't tweaked the gameplay at all for the [10th anniversary re-release of Halo: Combat Evolved](http://halo.xbox.com/en-us/intel/titles/haloanniversary) on Xbox 360. The only changes are the addition of some hidden Easter eggs and a graphical overhaul. You'll be able to switch between new and old graphics with the press of a button when you play this remake Nov. 15.
05halo-anniversary-behind-the-scenes-multiplayer
Halo: Anniversary — Behind the Scenes: Multiplayer -------------------------------------------------- In contrast to the relatively untouched single-player gameplay, the multiplayer mode of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary will be totally new. It'll be compatible with the existing Halo: Reach but will feature many classic maps upgraded for modern-day gameplay.
06twisted-metal
Twisted Metal ------------- Is it me, or is Twisted Metal's aesthetic seeming more and more like a remnant of times long past? Evil clowns driving beat-up cars with machine guns on them to the soundtrack of angry high-school bands seem inextricably linked to a nostalgia for the late '90s in the same way that the '50s are evoked by sock hops and malteds. Travel back in time this Feb. 14.
07sonic-cd
Sonic CD -------- Wired.com's resident Sonic the Hedgehog expert, John Mix Meyer, rates [this version](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/gamelife/2011/08/sonic-cd/), originally released in 1993 for the Sega CD, as one of the best in the series. This upgraded downloadable version of Sonic CD will drop for iPhones, Android, Windows Phone, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this winter.
08super-monday-night-combat
Super Monday Night Combat ------------------------- The original Monday Night Combat launched first on the Xbox 360. For the sequel to the over-the-top, team-based shooter, developer Uber Entertainment is leading on the PC. Why? Because it's a free-to-play game. This, Ars Technica reported earlier this week, means the shooter will be "[like a service, and less like a single game launch](http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/08/super-monday-night-combat.ars)." Constantly updated, full of cosmetic upgrades for your character that you can purchase ... all the things that make a "free" game earn a lot of money if people like it enough. Uber promises a closed beta version this year.
09metro-last-light
Metro: Last Light ----------------- THQ is so confident about its recent demo for shooter [Metro: Last Light](http://metro.thq.com/) that it isn't cutting the footage down into a trailer. It released the whole 13-minute playthrough of its E3 demo over the weekend. The sequel to Metro 2033 will be available at some point next year.
10scrolls
Scrolls ------- There's little to see in this PAX trailer besides a lot of image artwork and vague promises, but millions of Minecraft addicts are surely anticipating the next game from creator Markus "Notch" Persson. His upcoming strategy game [Scrolls](http://scrolls.com/) will mix "elements from the collectible card game genre as well as from traditional board games," according to its just-launched website. *Scrolls* will be released "eventually."
