Competition winners Dr. Ronan Daly and Dr. Alfonso Castrejon-Pita: Drying patterns of AKD on Glass *This optical microscopy image shows the drying and cracking of a film formed when an aklyl ketene dimer (AKD) dispersion is deposited and dried on a glass microscope slide. Acknowledgements: Supervisor: Professor Ian Hutchings.*

James Bendall: Embedded ZnO Cluster: The Tortoise in the Hair *A uniquely layered zinc oxide cluster has embedded itself into a nanostructured porous substrate, a by-product of a controlled crystallisation to form new components for sustainable energy devices.*

Pola Goldberg Oppenhiemer: The blossom of science *An SEM image of a rose-like nano-structure formed during unusual growth of graphene on Nickel membranes.*

Pola Goldberg Oppenheimer: Quirky nanoscience *As part of fabricating novel and advanced hierarchical nano-structures to mimic super adhesive properties of the gecko-foot, different lithographic routes are employed to prepare the micrometre size pillars. The attached image shows an artifact during the electrohydrodynamic patterning, which is one of the methods used to produce submicron pillars. While these structures are not directly the 'desired outcome' of the lithographic process, it is worthwhile considering their aesthetic appearance.*

Ching Theng Koh and Daniel Strange: Electrospun Scaffold - A Fibrous Material with Nanoscale Fibres Special - The Carl Zeiss SEM prize winning photograph *This photograph shows a network of electrospun fibres, made of polycaprolactone (PCL), a polymer frequently used in medical applications. The fibres shown here have an average diameter of 1 µm. The photograph was taken with a Zeiss EVO LS 15 scanning electron microscope at 3,000X magnification. Acknowledgements: Anne Bahnweg. Supervisor: Dr. Michelle L. Oyen*
