    Sound of My Voice

Five years before *The OA*, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij set the table for their puzzling Netflix series with this dark tale of documentarians investigating a mysterious Los Angeles cult.
  • WEINSTEIN COMPANY
    02

    Fruitvale Station

The acclaimed tale of Oscar Grant’s murder at the hand of transit cops in Oakland first brought Morrison together with writer-director Ryan Coogler—a relationship that would continue with *Black Panther*.
  • ELEPHANT EYE FILMS
    03

    The Harvest

Director David McNaughton (*Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer*, *Wild Things*) took more than a decade away from movies, then returned with this horror tale that was small, intimate, and truly terrifying.
  • Lionsgate / Everett Collection
    04

    Cake

Jennifer Aniston snagged a Golden Globe nomination for her performance as a woman dealing with the aftermath of a fatal car accident. *Friends* it ain’t.
  • INDIE RIGHTS
    05

    Druid Peak

A little-seen but well-regarded indie drama about a “troubled teen” who goes to live with his estranged park-ranger father—and forges a connection with a pack of wolves who live in the park.
  • OPEN ROAD FILMS
    06

    Dope

Rick Famuyiwa’s comedy about LA high-school kids getting caught up in a drug gang’s machination was a Sundance sensation, made stars out of Shameik Moore and Kiersey Clemons, and actually lived up to its name.
  • NETFLIX
    07

    Mudbound

Netflix’s historical drama about race, love, and friendship in the post-WWII South didn’t just make Morrison the first-ever woman to get a Best Cinematography nomination, but pulled in three others, including a Best Supporting Actress nom for Mary J. Blige.
  • MARVEL FILMS
    08

    Black Panther

Just a tiny little arthouse gem you probably haven’t seen.
