The reissued Golden Record takes form in three LPs, each in a poly-lined, paper sleeve, slipped inside a gold foil tip-on jacket.

A hardbound book of images from the original interstellar message and ephemera from the project's history accompanies the records.

Each LP is printed on translucent gold, heavyweight vinyl. The team opted for a material that could pay homage to the original, without compromising pristine audio quality.

A photo of Voyager 1 shows the original Golden Record attached to the outside of the spacecraft. The record is encased in a protective aluminum jacket together with a cartridge and needle.

The reissue is meant to be an art object, but one that doesn't just sit on the shelf. "We really wanted it to be something that people engage with," said designer Lawrence Azerrad.

Both the original and the reissued Golden Record contain hours of sounds from Earth, including greetings in 55 different languages.

Lawrence Azerrad has designed album art for Sting and the Beach Boys, but for this project he says he was "more of a curator than a designer."
