Fifty five million light years from the Earth is a galaxy called M87. This galaxy is home to an ultramassive black hole that was recently photographed by the Event Horizon Telescope. In this image, which is a combination of visible light and infrared, we can see M87 at the center and a zoomed-in section of the jets of gas getting ejected near the black hole. Because black holes are so massive, if anything passes near one, like a star for example, the mass rips apart the object sending gas and dust out at high enough speeds that they begin to glow from electromagnetic radiation. It is this beacon of destruction that allows us to even locate black holes in the first place.NASA/JPL-Caltech
