05The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter took this photo of the region Melas Chasma, the widest area of Mars’s Valles Marineris canyon—the Martian equivalent of Earth’s Grand Canyon. The lighter features are different kinds of sulfates, a byproduct of minerals evaporating in water. Melas Chasma was likely once covered in water some billions of years ago.
06The Juno spacecraft has been studying Jupiter’s glowing aurora, seen here in an animated reconstruction. Jupiter’s northern lights contain up to 30 times more electricity than the strongest aurora’s on Earth. Scientists are using Juno to better understand what might be fueling these dazzling displays.
