Al Gore – The Guy Who Was Veep From 1993 to 2001 – Is Speaking --------------------------------------------------------------- Further proving that the dream of the 1990s is alive at South By this year, former vice president Al Gore will be [giving a talk](http://sxsw.com/interactive/news/al-gore-returns-sxsw-interactive-saturday-march-9) on – irony! – *The Future*, his book about global change. Like Dave Grohl and Napster, his work has remained extremely relevant for years, so if anyone knows about turning the past into prologue, it's him. *Photo: [farber](http://www.flickr.com/photos/farber/3010981299/)/Flickr*

Bre Pettis Might Have Some Ideas for the Next Industrial Revolution -------------------------------------------------------------------- MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis would like to ignite a new industrial revolution with 3-D printing. The *last* Industrial Revolution – mind you – happened around the turn of the 19th century, so that's a big claim. Pettis is giving the opening remarks for the Interactive segment of SXSW, so the parameters of [his talk]( http://sxsw.com/interactive/news/bre-pettis-deliver-opening-remarks-march-8) are fairly loose, but hopefully he'll have some ideas for how we can reboot the next century like it's the 19th. *Photo courtesy MakerBot*

Dave Grohl Has a Movie About a Classic Recording Studio ------------------------------------------------------- Dave Grohl is a music icon. From Nirvana to Foo Fighters to every other side project in between he has been an integral part of music for more than 20 years. Now, he's also a documentary director and his feature debut *Sound City* [is coming to SXSW](http://schedule.sxsw.com/2013/events/event_FS13823) to introduce audiences to the legendary Southern California recording studio and the "ongoing fight to preserve the human element of music in an increasingly digital world." Elon Musk Will Probably Reinvent Another Old-School Industry ------------------------------------------------------------ In the last decade or so Elon Musk, the one-time PayPal co-founder, has infused serious power (Musk-le, maybe?) into two long-established industries: Auto manufacturing (with Tesla) and spaceflight (with SpaceX). Using dot-com know-how to bring super-charge concepts that have been around for decades, Musk is the ultimate in looking back to look forward. He doesn't get [compared to Tony Stark](http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/22/business/22sorkin.html?_r=0) for nothing. *Photo: Art Streiber*

The *Evil Dead* Remake Is Coming. Prepare to Get Scared Like It's 1983 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Want to know what set the tone for horror movies in the 1980s? Watch *The Evil Dead*. (For proof watch last year's [SXSW smash *The Cabin in the Woods*](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/underwire/2012/03/cabin-in-the-woods-sxsw/).) Want to know what it would look like with a 2010s budget and effects? Check out [the remake](http://www.evildead-movie.com/) – produced by the original *Dead* team of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell. Ash is gone in favor of a female lead named Mia, but it appears the sexually aggressive tree is still there. Pass the popcorn.
07kendrick-lamar
Kendrick Lamar Will Be Bringing the Spirit of '90s Compton to Austin -------------------------------------------------------------------- Emcee Kendrick Lamar is undoubtedly one of the best artists in hip-hop right now. He's also the embodiment of nostalgia for 1990s Southern California rap. Not only is he a Dr. Dre protégé, his work is peppered with references to the days of The Dogg Pound. See for example his single "Poetic Justice," which not only samples Janet Jackson's '90s bedroom jam "Any Time, Any Place" but borrows its name from the 1993 John Singleton film in which she starred. And if the video (above) isn't an homage to the director's early-'90s L.A.-based films, we'll eat a black Compton baseball hat. He's playing a ton of shows [in Austin in 2013](http://sxsw.com/music/news/spotify-back-sxsw-2013) – a perfect time to relive 1993 in Cali.

Joss Whedon Is Screening an Adaptation of a Shakespeare Play ------------------------------------------------------------ The tale of Joss Whedon's creation of *Much Ado About Nothing* is practically the stuff of legend at this point: During a 12-day break amidst the insanity of making *The Avengers*, he decided to bring some friends over and adapt a classic Shakespeare play. Using the original text. In black-and-white. Whedon has spent most of his career doing genre work (space westerns, vampire stuff, a comic book adaptation), so it'll be interesting to see [what he does with the Bard](http://schedule.sxsw.com/2013/events/event_FS13755) – someone whose work is about as far from genre as you can get. *Photo courtesy Roadside Attractions*
09rewind-this
There Is a Documentary Premiering About VHS Collectors ------------------------------------------------------- Dear (Former) Denizens of Video Stores: SXSW has a movie made just for you. *Rewind This!*, a [Kickstarter-funded documentary](http://www.rewindthismovie.com/), dives deep into the world of those who still scour flea markets for VHS gold looking for long-lost pieces of art. Want to relive the days of going to the mom-and-pop video shop in hopes of snagging the last copy of *Basket Case*? Then this flick is for you.

Detroit Techno Pioneer Richie Hawtin Will Be "In Conversation" With deadmau5 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman) was one of the originators of the Detroit techno sound of the 1990s rave scene. Deadmau5 puts on one of the most retina-popping live performances in any scene right now. For SXSW they're sitting down to compare notes – specifically about technology and social media. For those who want to know about hacking music, [this is the jam](http://sxsw.com/music/news/sxsw-music-announces-deadmau5-richie-hawtin-conversation-talk-techno-technology). *Photo: Drew Ressler*
