Gallery: Nerdiest TV Theme Covers: From Ramones' Spider-Man to Sonic Youth's Simpsons
01game-of-thrones-chvrches
So, in case it's gone unnoticed, the theme song to *Game of Thrones* is oddly catchy. Seriously, hum it at the office and it's almost guaranteed at least *one* person will join in. It's so infectious, in fact, that nearly everyone attempts to cover it – there are [acoustic versions](http://www.forevergeek.com/2011/07/10-game-of-thrones-theme-song-covers/), [strings versions](http://laughingsquid.com/cello-cover-of-game-of-thrones-theme-song-by-break-of-reality/), bağlama versions (or at least [one bağlama version](http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ige7pHTBcC0)), and even something called a "[70s metalstep remix](http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=CJRPWA1Fi2s#!)" of the song. Even the show's young cast has been known to belt out [a cappella versions](http://www.vulture.com/2013/03/see-the-game-of-thrones-cast-sing-the-theme-song.html) of the tune. And now, thanks to the magic of the internet, we have a version from electropop outfit Chvrches. The Scottish threesome put their keyboard-and-vocals version on YouTube Monday and then posted it to the band's Facebook page with the missive "[we keep our promises…](https://www.facebook.com/CHVRCHES/posts/512515058810285)" Yes, much like the Lannister family, Chvrches also always pays its debts; and while it's unclear why they owed us this track, we're certainly glad to have it. Unlike, say, a bağlama version, this one (above) stays fairly true to the sound of [Ramin Djawadi](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1014697/)'s original theme, but is played on the dance-y keyboards that produce Chvrches Glasgow-club-ready sound. Chvrches, of course, are just participating in a long tradition of bands covering timeless theme songs in an attempt to put their own spin on a great show (or just for the LoLs). [The Who once covered](http://thewho.com/album/a-quick-one/) the theme for the *Batman* TV show, metal band Powerglove took on the opener to the *X-Men* animated series, and Sonic Youth even once tackled the *Simpsons* theme. The list goes on and on... And naturally, we've made one of our own. Check out some of the best (read: nerdiest) TV theme covers in the gallery above. And, if all of this doesn't fill your theme-song cover needs, there's always this cover of the *Game of Thrones* [theme song by a cat](http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vEg4SEch27w).
02doctor-who-orbital-and-matt-smith
Orbital and Matt Smith Cover the *Doctor Who* Theme --------------------------------------------------- The awesomeness of this moment, where *Doctor Who* actor Matt Smith appeared on stage for at the 2010 Glastonbury festival for a spectacular rendition of his show's theme song by the electronic duo Orbital, should require no further no explanation. Just watch.
03the-simpsons-sonic-youth
Sonic Youth Covers *The Simpsons* Theme --------------------------------------- Many have attempted the Danny Elfman-penned *Simpsons* theme. Even Green Day tried it once. But this version by indie pioneers Sonic Youth – from the band's appearance on the 1996 episode "[Homerpalooza](http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Homerpalooza)" – wins all.
04gummi-bears-alicia-keys
Alicia Keys Covers the *Gummi Bears* theme song ----------------------------------------------- Almost certainly the most soulful rendition of a theme song from the Disney Afternoon, this tongue-in-cheek musical ode to the Gummi Bears -- and the suspiciously magical properties of their gummiberry juice -- was a high point for both Keys and *Late Night With Jimmy Fallon*.
05batman-the-who
The Who Cover the *Batman* Theme -------------------------------- Unlike the Flaming Lips version, which was released decades after the show aired, The Who's version of the *Batman* theme was [actually recorded in the 1960s](https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/batman/id1008186?i=1008139).
06x-men-powerglove
Powerglove Covers the *X-Men* Theme ----------------------------------- Leave it to a band named after an old Nintendo accessory to do a great metal cover of the theme to the *X-Men* animated series.
07mad-men-allison-williams
Allison Williams Covers the *Mad Men* Theme (Sorta) --------------------------------------------------- Before she was one of the *Girls*, Allison Williams was a minor internet sensation for this fairly smart not-quite-cover of RJD2's "A Beautiful Mine" (aka the *Mad Men* theme) mixed with Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy."
08doctor-who-tesla-coils
Tesla Coils Cover the *Doctor Who* Theme ---------------------------------------- *Doctor Who*: Getting the best cover versions since, like, ever.
09spider-man-the-ramones
The Ramones Cover the *Spider-Man* Theme ---------------------------------------- Basically, [this cover](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greatest_Hits_Live_(Ramones_album)) of the *Spider-Man* theme from the 1960s just makes us wish there was a punk-rock Peter Parker in the world.
10the-adventures-of-pete-and-pete-tera-melos
Tera Melos Cover *The Adventures of Pete and Pete* Theme -------------------------------------------------------- Ok, so technically this Sacramento band covering Polaris' "Hey Sandy," which was used for the *Pete and Pete* theme, but their homage to the show opener is a nice touch.
11batman-the-flaming-lips
The Flaming Lips Cover the *Batman* Theme ----------------------------------------- Huh. Psychedelic indie rockers [tackling a superhero TV show theme](http://www.amazon.com/Finally-Punk-Rockers-Taking-1983-1988/dp/tracks/B00006FX66/ref=dp_tracks_all_1#disc_1), punk-style? It's no Who cover, but we'll take it.
