Gallery: Never-Before-Seen Twin Peaks Photos Go Behind the Scenes of Surreal Show

Television didn't know what hit it when the plastic-wrapped corpse of Laura Palmer washed up in *Twin Peaks* 20 years ago. Now a series of never-before-seen photographs will give fans a fresh look at the groundbreaking series. [Paula K. Shimatsu-u](http://purelypaula.com/), who worked as the show's publicist, took the pictures -- like the one above showing actress Sherilyn Fenn, who played bad girl Audrey Horne. The images will appear in Shimatsu-u's forthcoming book, *Northwest Passages*. Shimatsu-u landed the gig despite a lack of photographic experience. "I still don't know what an [f-stop](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-number) is," she told Wired.com. "I relied on my automatic camera, and for shooting in low light levels with no flash allowed, I think I got some pretty superb images." Fans seem to agree: A few of Shimatsu-u's prop shots of Sheryl Lee (who played Laura Palmer) and a stuffed bird named Waldo sold out online in less than 24 hours. Shimatsu-u's behind-the-scenes images capture the bizarre essence of a show that captivated viewers with a weird mix of murder, mystery and small-town eccentricities, with a dancing dwarf and other surreal visions thrown in for good measure. Created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, *Twin Peaks* altered the face of entertainment, pushing the boundaries of what could be done on TV. The show's loose narrative structure, absurdist character studies and surreal soap-opera fantasies inspired a cavalcade of imitators and garnered fans that remain fanatical about the show to this day. Since 1992, the *Twin Peaks* faithful have gathered in Washington state for the [Twin Peaks Fest](http://www.twinpeaksfest.com/) to watch films, eat cherry pie and tour locations used in the show. At this year's festival, they'll witness a unique slideshow of Shimatsu-u's photographs. Here's a sneak peek at some of the images.
