Unabomber's Handwritten Notes ----------------------------- In this document, Kaczynski describes the circumstances when he first realized that murdering others was at least a temporary cure for his general unhappiness. He was a graduate student at the University of Michigan when the realization hit him.

The auction of Theodore Kaczynski's writings and other material seized from his Montana cabin in 1996 might be considered macabre or settling a debt to society. But however you feel about it, the two-week online auction is winding down. One of the most highly valued lots for sale online by the General Services Administration are Kaczynski's "personal journals." The last bid was about $41,000 for his handwritten "thoughts and feelings about himself, society and living in the wilderness." The auction concluded Thursday evening. The government wanted to keep the material, but the sale was ordered by the courts to raise restitution for his victims. Kaczynski, dubbed the Unabomber, pleaded guilty in 1998 to a nearly 20-year series of bombings that killed three people and wounded 23. He wanted his property donated to the University of Michigan. His so-called "manifesto" in which he railed against technology, sold for $20,053. In all, the auction has raised more than $232,000. Kaczynski is serving a life sentence without parole for bombings between 1978 and 1995. He led authorities on the nation's longest, costliest manhunt before his brother tipped off authorities in 1996. __Above:__ Kaczynski's L3 Smith-Corona --------------------------- Kaczynski used this L3 Smith-Corona portable manual typewriter to type most of his documents, including his "Manifesto."

Unabomber Hooded Sweatshirt --------------------------- Kaczynski used various methods to disguise his identity when he traveled to commit crimes. A witness who saw him in this gray hooded sweatshirt and aviator sunglasses helped an artist make an infamous sketch of the mysterious Unabomber.

Unabomber's Hand Tools ---------------------- These small hand tools were removed from Kaczynski's cabin during the search. Kaczynski's construction of explosive devices was all done by hand, without power tools, and he used wood and metal scraps obtained from trash when possible.

Unabomber Tool Kits ------------------- Kaczynski's kept small tools in several makeshift containers, including the Tide box. This collection of pieces makes up one of his homemade "tool kits."

Unabomber Weather Instrument ---------------------------- This lot contains a device that was used to measure weather, apparently dropped from an airplane. Kaczynski found it while hiking.
