Gallery: Video Artists Get Tricky With Stop Motion
01sorrylate-100-0
First used in 1897, stop motion has evolved beyond just character sculptures. Walls of art, colored pencils, and sculptures are all fair game for animation. All you need is a little patience, attention to detail and a camera. Check out these videos to see how video artists today are taking this hundred-year-old technique to a whole new level. __Above:__ It's Just One of Those Days ---------------------------- Filmed in 2007, “Sorry I’m Late” is a stop motion short that uses stills from a camera on the ceiling pointed at the floor. Filmmaker Tomas Mankovsky gives a creative and unique look at depth perception by using small objects close to the camera next to subjects far in the background.

Mobius Moves Melbourne ----------------------- Melbourne’s Eness animates 21 large triangles in this intriguing short film. The MÖBIUS sculpture can be configured into many cyclical patterns. It often looks as though it’s eating itself while sinking into the ground. See how people interact with the optical illusion that moves through Melbourne's landmark location in this time-lapse.

Appalachian Trail in 5 Minutes ------------------------------- The Green Tunnel shows a six-month journey along the 2,200-mile-long Appalachian Trail. The film condenses the trail into five minutes of stop motion. Filmmaker and mountain man Kevin Gallagher shot 24 successive steps down the trail each day. At the end of the journey he had over 4,000 photos, which were then strung together. Here’s what an accelerated hike along the Appalachian mountain range looks like.

My Desk is 8-bit ----------------- San Francisco's Alex Varanese wondered what his desk would look like in Atari-style 8-bit form. He made this film using blocks to create a lifelike and tangible videogame screen. He also includes a matching authentic 8-bit soundtrack.
