Welcome to another *Vulcan's View*, where we get a look at the panoply of volcanic activity as captured by our eyes in the sky. Axial Seamount, off of Oregon ----------------------------- There was a lot of news of the last couple weeks about the [prediction for the next eruption of Axial Seamount](http://esciencenews.com/articles/2012/06/10/undersea.volcano.gave.signals.eruption.2011). The undersea volcano is wired with sensors, so changes in seismicity (via hydrophones) and changes to the seafloor (measured sometimes by repeated sonar surveys or submersibles - see above) can be used to assess the state of the volcano. Research at Axial suggests that the current deformation of the seafloor means an eruption should happen [as soon as 2014](http://www.nature.com/ngeo/journal/vaop/ncurrent/abs/ngeo1464.html?WT.mc_id=TWT_NatureGeosci). In the short term, they found that seismicity at the volcano sharply increased within 3 hours of the [volcano's 2011 eruption](http://www.oregonwin.org/2011_Axial_Seamount/) - something happens at the terrestrial brethren of Axial. We probably know more about [Axial Seamount](http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=1301-021) than any other submarine volcano, so the information gleaned from this volcano can help us understand how some of the other thousands of submarine volcanoes might behave before an eruption. *Image: An exaggerated bathymetry map of Axial Seamount. Campi Flegrei, Italy -------------------- Another piece of research-related news this week came from Italy, where [estimates of the size for the Campi Flegrei eruption](http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/47906222/ns/technology_and_science-science/#.T-ONx461PFM) ~28,000 years ago are going up. A new [study in *Geophysical Research Letters* by Costa and others](http://www.agu.org/pubs/crossref/2012/2012GL051605.shtml) has doubled the estimated volume of the Campanian Ignimbrite to 250-300 cubic kilometers. A combination of 3D modeling of the ash from the eruption combined with thickness measurements to use as guides allowed for this new estimate. Karymsky, Russia ---------------- Here is a shot showing three Kamchatkan volcanoes - [Karymsky](http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=1000-13=), [Akademia Nauk](http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=1000-125) and [Maly Semiachik](http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=1000-14=). This image shows some of the [grey ash from Karymsky](http://www.volcano.si.edu/reports/usgs/index.cfm?wvarweek=20120613#karymsky) on the white snow of the Peninsula seen in the Spring of 2012. This image can trick the eye a bit as [Karymsky](http://www.kscnet.ru/ivs/kvert/current_eng.php?name=Karymsky) can appear like a depression, like the crater lakes on top of both Akademia Nauk and Maly Semiachik. 04grimsvotn-iceland
Grímsvötn, Iceland ------------------ Last May (2011), we were all watching the [large (and short-lived) eruption of Grímsvötn](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/05/subglacial-eruption-starting-at-icelands-grimsvotn/) in Iceland. That eruption produced the [largest plume in Iceland](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/05/that-about-wraps-it-up-for-the-grimsvotn-eruption/) in over 50 years - but caused nothing like the air travel disruption of [2010's Eyjafjallajökull eruption](http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/341634/title/Icelandic_volcanoes_slumber_today,_but_not_forever). The evidence of the 2011 Grímsvötn eruption is still visible at the surface, is an arcuate opening in the ice cap on the volcano. This was the source of the eruption and the meltwater that produced some of the jokulhlaups associated with the eruption. Eventually, this scar on [Vatnajökull](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/01/vatnajokull-and-the-volcanoes-under-the-glacier-in-iceland/), the ice cap on Grímsvötn, will be healed, only to have new gashes ripped open during the next eruption of the volcano. *Image: The fissure from the 2011 eruption of Grímsvötn. Kilauea, Hawai'i ---------------- Ever-busy Kilauea continues to produce copious lava flows - some of which have made it [almost to the sea](http://www.hawaii247.com/2012/06/16/kilauea-lava-flows-less-than-a-mile-from-the-ocean/). This [June 12, 2012 image](http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=78260) of the southeast rift zone of the volcano shows the active lava flows (as red squares). However, the [flows are moving slowly](http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/activity/archive/current.php?noticeid=7433), so whether an [ocean entry](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jImRHrhAZGk) will occur is still unknown. *Image: The southeast rift zone of Kilauea. Pagan, CNMI ----------- Another volcano that falls under the watchful eye of the USGS is [Pagan](http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=0804-17=) in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Much of the volcano monitoring that is done for Pagan is via remote sensing thanks to its location in the Pacific Ocean. 07iwo-jima-japan
Iwo-Jima/Ioto, Japan -------------------- Sometimes we have little evidence of activity at remote volcanoes - such as at the [Iwo-Jima/Ioto](http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=0804-12=) caldera in the Pacific. Even in this satellite image of the area, the evidence is ambiguous about whether there is a small plume showing near the island or just a cloud. The last confirmed eruption of Iwo-Jima [took place in 2009](http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=0804-12=&volpage=erupt) and it has had frequent small (VEI 1) eruptions over the past few decades. *Image: A potential plume at Iwo-Jima seen during the Spring of 2012. Curry, South Sandwich Islands ----------------------------- Things get even trickier when there are a lot of clouds that can disguise a plume. The [plume spotted this May at Curry](http://stag-komodo.wired.com/wiredscience/2012/05/eruption-spotted-at-mt-curry-in-the-south-sandwich-islands/) (part of the greater [Zavodovski volcano](http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=1900-13=)) in the South Sandwich Island blended with the clouds in the area - and vortices caused by the interaction of wind and clouds in the south Atlantic can make identifying plumes tricky. *Image: A May 2012 image of the plume from Curry in the South Sandwich Islands. Karthala, Comoros Islands ------------------------- Finally, we end with the wispy plume from [Karthala](http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=0303-01=) in the Comoros Islands [seen on May 29, 2006](http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=16764). Many people aren't aware of the active volcanoes on the Comoros Islands, off the east coast of Africa. However, Karthala, a basaltic shield volcano, has erupted [numerous times over the past century](http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/comores/karthala.html) - as [recently as 2007](http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=0303-01=&volpage=erupt). The volcano even produced a [VEI 3 eruption in 2005](http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/view.php?id=72751).
