Behind the Signals: Presented by T.Rowe Price
T. Rowe Price portfolio managers Jodi Love and Dom Rizzo sat with artist Karyn Nakamura to discuss Signals From the Noise, the artwork she created for T. Rowe Price. The immersive 10-foot, circular installation is a visual metaphor: Just as Nakamura synthesizes beauty from the raw material of market data, T. Rowe Price portfolio managers bring curiosity and creativity to their actively managed exchange-traded funds (ETFs), helping to turn market noise into investment opportunities.

I work with data in all sorts of different ways.
[intriguing music]
It's such a rich medium
to interpret and understand the world.
In this installation, Signals From the Noise,
the overarching concept was the emergence
of structure from systems of motion,
and there are lots of different ways
that you can draw signals from data.
When you and I are looking at the same data set,
we're looking at chaos.
I think about that and you're creating art,
you're creating light and structure and symbolism,
and I'm trying to create a portfolio out of the same chaos.
And that is crucial to running an active ETF.
That's exactly what we're trying
to do in our day-to-day jobs, right?
Trying to find something that's unique to T. Rowe
and unique to us and creating an active ETF portfolio.
And in many ways, crafting a portfolio
is like crafting, you know, an art piece.
A lot of the time, working with data is presented
as something a lot more rigid than it actually is.
Working with data is actually
a lot more crafty and subjective.
Then there's also a lot of creativity
that goes into these processes.
I love this idea that we can look at the same exact data,
and we can have just different judgment in a situation.
I think that's the role of the artist,
and that's the role of the portfolio manager.
When someone stands in front of the installation,
I'd like them to experience the richness of data
and the complexity of data
and the multifaceted nature of it.
What stands out the most to me is the actual circle.
That's the heart of the piece.
And that's a perfect metaphor for the market.
There's no beginning, there's no end.
So as you talk about the movement
of your installation, Signal From the Noise,
is so relevant and is such a great metaphor for what we do.
I really had a lot of fun comparing our experiences.
That's something that I value a lot in my work
is trying to understand
how the same medium can be interpreted
in different worlds and different environments.
All of us start in this sea of uncertainty,
trying to find insights in data,
trying to put it all together,
in our cases, to create unique portfolios,
and in your case, this beautiful installation.
Finding the signal within the noise is what's left
after you cut everything else away.
