How Bitdefender Box 2 Can Protect Your Devices from Hackers | Wired Brand Lab
Released on 09/06/2018
I'm Sammy Kamkar, I'm a security researcher.
My friend Mick, who's a DJ and entrepreneur,
has invited me to remotely monitor his network
and look for security vulnerabilities,
as well as privacy issues on his devices.
So, just how exposed
can one improperly configured device leave you?
Let's find out.
(melodic music)
So I've been going over some of this video
and just seeing the devices on your network
and how you're interfacing with them,
and really the potential vulnerable points
that are in your network.
And I found a couple that I wanted to share.
You actually have this NAS device right there,
that's your Network-attached storage device.
The problem is, if you don't keep that software up to date
it's possible for cybercriminals
to actually attack vulnerabilities in that device.
[Mick] Wow!
Yeah, once someone can actually get into there,
then they can actually access
all of your private information.
Even if your software is kept up to date,
it's possible that cybercriminals
use something called a brute force attack.
Now, a brute force attack is when someone takes
thousands or tens of thousands of passwords
and automatically runs through them,
attempting to find the correct password for your device.
If they can actually find the right password,
then they can get in and access your files.
But not only that, once they're in your NAS,
they can actually pivot from that device
onto other devices on your network.
[Mick] That's highly scary.
Recently, the FBI issued an international warning
for Russian-backed malware called VPNFilter,
that's basically attacked
tens of thousands of these NAS devices.
This malware is crazy.
It's able to access all of your files
and even make the NAS, or device, inoperable.
So if they wanted, they could just shut down your data,
remove any ability for you to access that data
and those private documents, back-ups,
and other important information that you have.
What can I do to protect myself against these threats?
You really want an additional home security device
that is monitoring all network traffic.
A good example of that is the Bitdefender Box 2.
Okay.
So the Box 2 can do a lot of things.
For one, it can prevent brute force attacks.
It will ensure that things like your usernames,
passwords, private documents, aren't going out unencrypted
so that someone else can't access that data.
The Box 2 also can do things like prevent malware,
so really common things that have attacked
tens of thousands of people, like VPNFilter,
it actively blocks.
Thank you, thank you for helping me realize
what's at stake with my privacy and with my family.
As you know it's super important to me, so thank you.
Appreciate it.
