First 3-D Printed Record is Amazing
Released on 12/19/2012
Hi I'm Amanda from Instructables
and today I'm going to be printing on a 3D printer.
(laughs)
This is the software that controls the printer.
Basically I just come in here and serve my model.
This is a twelve inch record.
Just full size up to 33.
So this is the object printer.
It prints with the UV cured resin material.
And it prints at really high resolution.
And today I'm printing out real working records.
So I'm pretty excited about it.
So the grooves on this record are al little different
than a regular vinyl record.
Each groove is about ten times wider
and ten times deeper than a normal record.
You can't really fit quite as much audio on each side
as you would a normal record.
You can fit about five or six minutes of recording.
Okay so you're ready?
These 3D files of these records are very high resolution.
Just for this minute of audio on here
this is a 200 megabyte file.
It's made of about
four million of these little triangles
kind of like, all arranged in 3D space to create
this 3D model.
These records are pretty sturdy.
So you don't really have to
worry too much about damaging them.
Just let the water kind of evaporate.
So I'm from Seattle,
so I printed out Nirvana Smells Like Team Spirit.
(record screech)
(rock music)
Um, we actually played this record in our office
and somebody got out their phone
and was running one of those apps
that can recognize songs
and it totally picked this up.
So that was really cool.
This is Daft Punk Around The World.
This is kind of a work in progress.
It sounds really good in the beginning
but as soon as the bass drum starts kicking in
it's actually so funky and so hard hitting
that it's been throwing the needle off
and causing it to skip around.
So it's caused me to revise my algorithm a bit.
But I think I'm going to be able
to get a good print eventually.
And then, this is was my original thing that I started.
This is Pixies to Basser.
This is the first song that I printed
and it is what I used to kind of optimize
my program and really get
the sound signal to noise pretty good.
