How Slack Changed the Culture at WIRED | The Future Of Work | WIRED Brand Lab
Released on 02/01/2019
When we say anything here at Wired,
what do we really mean?
Wow, anything and everything.
[electronic music]
What's the culture like at Wired?
So I think I go back to
something one of our founding editors has said
that change is good but more change is better.
And I think does a really good job
of summing up the culture that exists at Wired.
It's extremely collaborative,
extremely open, it's a great environment.
I love it here.
I'd love to get your perspectives on how
Slack shapes leadership transparency here at Wired.
Slack is super helpful 'cause I know
there's an open door to approach someone
and say you know I just have something
I really want your thoughts on for a few minutes.
I know you're super busy
but management has been so great about it.
[Ryan] One of the practices that I've seen here at Wired
that's been really helpful is this idea of an AMA.
AMA stands for what?
Essentially just stands for ask me anything.
It allows for people from all over the organization
to have an extremely transparent and honest conversation.
I think it's a really great opportunity
to sort of bring up our pain points
that we have here to upper level management.
And those problems can be solved.
I mean I can think of one example.
Someone had presented the idea
of allowing female products to be free in the restrooms.
And it was posted in an AMA on Slack.
People reacted to it and it happened.
Yeah I mean the AMA format,
having it on a platform like Slack
is tremendously helpful because you know
that all the right parties are really listening.
What I think that's the biggest thing.
The visibility into how decisions are made
gives you a sense of confidence
that things are getting done.
[Ryan] Absolutely.
