Meet the Bird That Soars Thousands of Miles at a Time

[Narrator] Trust me, if we had the budget
I would've blown every last penny
to buy the rights to Danger Zone for this.
But, alas, we'll just have to appreciate
the majestic albatross without it.
Which should be easy because the albatross
is a bird of incredible proportions
just look at the wingspan on this thing.
It can stretch an astounding 11 feet,
a record among birds.
That means a whole lot of surface area,
which in turn means a whole lot of lift.
The albatross is a seabird among seabirds.
By riding the wind, it can fly nonstop across whole oceans.
It'll travel some 10 thousand miles
without hardly beating a wing,
covering 500 miles a day.
The albatross is so at home at sea
that it can even drink saltwater.
How exactly?
Check out that tube-like thing at the base of the bill.
A gland behind the eyes concentrates the salt
and excretes it through this organ.
That's why the albatross is also known
as a tube nose.
It probably prefers to be called albatross, though.
