Quantum computing is really gonna be
an amazing leap forward for the entire world.
Quantum mechanics is really the fundamental physics
that underlies the natural world around us.
All the atoms and molecules that make up our world
follow the laws of quantum mechanics.
Our standard computers today,
they process information at zeros and ones
but quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits,
which follow the laws of quantum mechanics.
They qubit can actually be in zero, one or
a super position of zero and one at the same time.
These principles basically allow you to
actually access an exponential space.
By having this larger space, you're able to
perform calculations that are not possible
using conventional computers.
And so it's by having this additional information
that a quantum computer can get its power.
One of the really exciting goals for quantum computers
is to be able to explore these problems
which are exponential in their nature.
Understanding chemical structure.
And what does that really mean?
That means how would you design better drugs in the future?
Potentially solving optimization problems
that are just absolutely too challenging
from routing and logistics.
We hope to explore solutions for those
really, really challenging problems.
Even unlock some of the secretes behind
the genesis of life.
One of the real challenges of building quantum computers
is how do we preserve those quantum states?
How do we shield them from vibration,
heat, any kind of stray electromagnetic fields?
The qubits which we work with,
they need to be cooled down to
really low temperatures for them to work.
In fact we cool them down inside of
dilution refrigerators that get down to 15 millikelvin,
that's way colder than it is in outer space.
A big part of the challenge of what we work on
to scale up is dealing with those types of problems.
Quantum computers are not likely to be in your homes,
just because of the infrastructure
required to run them.
They're gonna be systems which are accessible via the cloud.
Quantum computing is like computing with
the full force of nature behind you.
