Early next year the U.S. Army will test the CarBomb Finder, a device that uses radiation to detect the presence of explosives at short distances. The vehicle-based HiEnergy Technologies system extends a sensor arm over the suspected target and takes up to 3 minutes to complete a vehicle scan.
HiEnergy says the technology can penetrate metal casing to detect chemical compounds including drugs and is 97.75 percent accurate. The system combines a power supply, sensors and computers that can fit in a large van or tank.
The company also manufacturers devices for analyzing briefcases as well as a robot bomb detector. Imagine how long those 180 seconds will seem.
