The auto industry has been experimenting with using radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to locate parts inside the factory, and now are looking to track tires wirelessly.
Goodyear is tracking race car tires with RFID to make sure the correct tires are lent and returned.
Smart tags could alert drivers if treads are wearing thin or leaking, and could make monitoring tire pressure less expensive than the current technology. A dollar or two per tire isn't much for manufacturers and consumers to pay for the convenience of expediting inventory and safer driving.
