When there's no power or functioning cell towers, who you gonna call?
The government sends in the MC2 SUV built by Wolf Coach. The four-person vehicles generate their own power and communicate via satellite through a VoIP connection.
The DOD just ordered another 19 of the vehicles, which have been used by FEMA (Katrina's probably not a communications case study for the company to promote) and the National Guard.
Communications is often the difference between a successful or failed mission, and it's a testament to the reliability of VoIP that the technology is being used in crisis situations. Maybe soon we'll see Skype-based satellite phones on luxury vehicles as a better quality connection to mobile phones.
