In a recent study from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one-third of all car fatalities in 2004 occurred in vehicles that rolled. SUVs were far more likely to roll than any other vehicle, followed by light trucks. Most roll-overs occur when the vehicle is passing, rather than turning—and almost always at a high speed. The catch-22 of greater vehicle reliability is that yesterday’s SUVs will be traveling our highways for years to come. Worse, they’re more likely to become hand-me-down vehicles to beginning drivers. Young males were more likely to roll a vehicle than any other driver.
