How Bitdefender Box 2 Can Secure Your Home Network from Hackers | Wired Brand Lab
Released on 09/06/2018
I'm Samy Kamkar.
I'm a security researcher.
My friend Mick is a deejay and entrepreneur
whose devices allow him to stay connected
to his family and his son.
Mick has allowed me to invade his home network
and see what kind of security vulnerabilities
and privacy issues exist.
Cyber criminals are constantly trying
to break into devices of personal home networks,
and they're trying to do this so that
they can steal information.
One of the least suspicious culprits
of a vulnerable network are actually baby monitors.
One of the things that I see you're doing here a lot
is looking at your baby monitor app.
There are services like Shodan, which is a legal service,
where people can actually look
for internet connected devices.
They'll then use default credentials
or a brute force attack to break into that baby monitor.
Many of these apps do not properly encrypt
when using SSL to communicate with their cloud system.
Essentially, if the app itself doesn't validate
that the cloud system is using the correct certificate,
that means a malicious attacker can
intercept the communication and then access
the user name, password, watch the video stream,
or do worse, potentially pivot from the baby monitor
onto any other device on your network.
In 2013, Target actually suffered a massive breach
where attackers were able to break into their network
and download 40 million credit card numbers.
I was one of them.
Oh, that's crazy.
They were able to get in through an
internet connected HVAC system.
Cyber criminals are also using online messaging systems
to send chat requests to you,
and often what they'll do is they'll send
something like a technical document
that's actually malicious software.
So if you run that, they then have full access to your
microphone and camera on your smart TV.
You really want an additional home security device
that is monitoring all network traffic.
A good example of that is the Bitdefender BOX 2.
Okay.
So for one, it'll prevent brute force attacks.
It also has webcam protection, so that the webcam
and microphone aren't engaged when they shouldn't be,
and for someone like you, with a family,
it has parental controls, so you can monitor
what activity is going on, you know,
with your child, for example.
Soon they'll be adding additional features
to prevent cyber-bullying.
The way I feel when I see somebody like
attacking my home through a baby monitor
just sets off emotions on all sorts of levels,
so I do thank you for showing me that's preventable.
First of all that it's going on,
which is super scary, but it's also preventable
with the right device.
It all comes down to one simple rule.
Don't leave yourself vulnerable.
Appreciate it, man.
Yeah, thank you.
